As summer ramps up, you'll naturally be sweating more. And if you don't replenish the water you lose, you could easily face dehydration, headaches, constipation and dry skin.
Enter the wonderful world of watermelons and cucumber -- nature's most hydrating foods. Not only do these two consist of more than 80 per cent water, they're considered "cooling" foods in both Chinese and Indian medicine.
Chris Savidge, Chinese practitioner at 889 Yonge, advises watermelon is excellent for the treatment and prevention of heat stroke. In my world, watermelon is one of the most thirst-quenching fruits, packed with antioxidant goodness like lycopene. In contrast to other phytonutrients, lycopene has been tested on humans (not just animals) and can reduce the risk of prostate, breast, endometrial, lung and colorectal cancers.
Kristen Ma, co-owner of Pure + Simple, says cucumber is a natural cooling food in Ayruveda, ancient Indian medicine. The potassium content of cucumber makes it highly useful for conditions like high and low blood pressure. A source of erepsin, an enzyme that helps to digest protein makes cucumber a highly desirable vegetable to eat prior to your main meal.
(*Note: You will need a juicer for this recipe.)
Ingredients:
1/4 watermelon, washed, cut into chunks. (Cut the peel away if it's not organic.)
1/2 cucumber
Handful of fresh mint
Method:
Blend all ingredients together in a juicer. Chill. Drink!

Hi, Joy This sounds delicious! I don't have a juicer, though... Can I just do it in my smoothie mixer and then strain it? Have a nice day!
ReplyHi Sascha,
Yep totally, that works! Enjoy!
