After I posted these on Instagram, someone suggested I name them Joyous Sunshine Balls – which I love! I haven't renamed them but they sure do look like sunshine and they will feel joyous in your belly, too. Yellow is one of my favourite colours so I was delighted with how bright and sunny these look.
The ingredients in these balls are super simple. I added oats, shredded coconut and hemp hearts as the main ingredients along with turmeric, lemon juice and dried mango, which give the recipe its gorgeous colour!
They taste like a cross between a macaroon and your favourite energy ball.
Soft on the inside and meaty in the way a macaroon is. They remind me of an energy ball because, well, they're energizing, thanks to the oats, which are rich in fibre and blood sugar-balancing!
Adding maple syrup for extra sweetness is completely optional, but it is necessary to process all the ingredients in a high-powered food processor so they stick well. You want to process all the ingredients until they start to stick together.
I would suggest you store them in the fridge for up to 1 week or in the freezer for up to 3 months. If you want to make them grain-free you can simply omit the oats and add more shredded coconut.
Oh and if you don't want to stain your hands yellow, it might be worthwhile to put on gloves, which I did not do!

I've talked about the health benefits of turmeric on the blog many times and I have so many recipes with this incredible superfood ingredient. So rather than repeat those details, let's gets my delicious recipe!
Makes 15 medium size balls.
*I chopped the mango up before measuring and measured 1/2 cup chopped.
**I used New Chapter's Fermented Organic turmeric.
***Add water slowly to food processor. You may not need the full amount.
It's worth repeating that these yummy balls are kid-friendly because they're nut-free. The perfect lunch box treats for you and your little one! Toss one in your bag for a post-workout quick snack – they offer a perfect boost of clean energy and are super blood sugar balancing.
Since posting these on Instagram, quite a few of you have been asking me if you can use fresh mango instead of dried mango. The answer is yes, but note that you'll have to increase the dry ingredients, adding either more shredded coconut or rolled oats.

ReplyYou can but I would dry them out first in the oven or dehydrator if you have one before combining them because the batter will likely be too wet.
Hi, Joy! I so love all that you share. I am wanting to try the Turmeric Mango Golden Balls. My question: since we follow a low lectin diet at our house, what would you suggest to replace the 1/2 cup rolled oats? Would millet or sorghum work, maybe puffed millet? Thanks, Michelle

ReplyI'm not sure sorry but if I had to guess I would say 70-85. You can plug the ingredients into a fitness app like My Fitness Pal and you'll find out. I hope that helps!

Hi Joy. This recipe looks so great. I am preparing to make them. I noticed in the above message that you said maple syrup is optional but necessary to blend the ingredients in the high powered processor. How much maple syrup do you recommend? I tried these today in my Vitamix, they didn't come together quite well. Any thought on why? Did it not get blended well enough? I found having to wet my hands quite a bit. Thanks! Will see how they maintain shape after some time in the fridge!
