For those who didn't know, my hubs is not just my hubs. He's also my business partner and half of Joyous Health.
When people first realize this the next few questions are inevitably "How do you make it work?". It's true that working with your significant other can pose a unique set of challenges, but at the same time, it can be the best thing in the world and I personally wouldn't have it any other way.
In my latest video, Walker and I answer some of your most frequently asked questions about how we maintain a healthy relationship while working together!
Is your business partner also your life partner? Let us know how YOU make it work!

I loved the video! Wish you answered more questions. How long have your been together vs worked together? And how has it changed with Vienna in the pic? How old is she? You guys are all adorable.
ReplyWe've been together almost 7 years and worked together officially in the same office since October 2013. It hasn't really changed our working relationship much having a daughter but I'm in the office less. Vienna is 20 months. Thanks for your comment!
You are both so cute
ReplyAren't they!? :) Haha. Thanks Cindy! Rachel - Joyous Health Team
I really like this topic, thanks for sharing! My fiance started working with me this year and it was definitely a bit of a struggle at first, we had more arguments in the the first month than in our entire relationship previous! It seemed to be a hard transition, especially when one partner is the boss. Myself having trouble giving orders and pointing out mistakes worrying that it will hurt his feelings and having to put feelings aside to make sure the business runs properly. For him, I think it was very hard to be told what to do by his partner. He kept wanting to change my process and it drove me nuts! What makes it work for us is communication. As well, learning that we have to separate our personal relationship from our work relationship. Setting up boundaries, like you guys mentioned, not talking about work when work is done for the day. It is still a work in progress for us, but it has gotten so much easier once we figured out our groove. I love seeing how well you guys are working together! You are setting a great example!
ReplyHey Tricia, That's amazing! It sounds like you both have learned and grown so much already since working together. It will only get easier and you'll have your system ironed out in no time. We're rooting for you :) Rachel - Joyous Health Team
My husband and I ran a mail order nursery together for ten years. I read a magazine article early on about three couples who all worked with their spouses in different businesses, and they all expressed the same strategy of having very separate roles. We took it a step further and when one of us was trying to horn in on the area of the other we said "out of my sandbox", as a code for backing off. It takes a lot of communication, and we also had rules about not talking about "Rs" (roses) on days off. It never really hit me that we were unusual until a friend said that she could never work with her husband, so I think I had more patience after that, realizing we were doing something very special that others couldn't /wouldn't consider possible for themselves.
ReplyHey Janet, I love that! It's a great strategy and you guys found a playful way to go about it that wouldn't disturb your day-to-day productivity. You guys are awesome! Wishing you all the best :) Rachel - Joyous Health Team
My girlfriend and I work together as well. We have an office at home, and do everything together. It's the best!!!
